For this newest edition of exground filmfest, we are as always proud to bring you a very worthwhile programme featuring roughly 180 productions – representing a cross-section of the international cinema class of 2017/2018, selected from the more than 2,500 submitted short and feature-length films and the cream of the festival crop that we have had the pleasure of catching in person. And the biggest compliment you could pay us for our unpaid efforts would be to show up in the greatest possible numbers to share in this cinematic journey around the world with us. Ease back into the comfy theatre seats at Caligari FilmBühne and Murnau-Filmtheater, or come out to celebrate with us at the cult-venue Kulturpalast and to the opening party, the exhibitions, our lounges, the lectures and panels and to the concert with the FABS, let yourself be carried away to other worlds and cultures and experience audience favourites from other festivals, and take advantage of the opportunity to enter into dialogue with the over 100 film guests that are expected to attend the festival.
All of the documentaries, fiction feature films and short film competitions at noon, 3:00 pm, 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm at Caligari FilmBühne will be shown in German language versions or with German subtitles – the same goes for all of the feature-length films of this year’s Country Focus on the Philippines at Murnau-Filmtheater. Aside from the rich film programme, in the scope of two panel discussions we will take a look at the cinema history of the South Pacific island nation and the human rights situation there, and the exhibition PARADISE LOST will feature the work of Philippine artists at Nassauischer Kunstverein. Films from the Country Focus will also be shown in select cinemas in Darmstadt and Frankfurt am Main. Here we would like to especially thank all of our co-operation partners and Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain – without their generous support, this comprehensive country focus would not have been possible.
In their 15th edition, the exground youth days will also once again take young viewers along on an exciting cinematic journey to other countries and cultures. How do young people live in other parts of the world? What is on their minds as they make their way towards adulthood? What are they passionate about – what worries or troubles them? Here too we will be showing all of the feature-length films with German subtitles in 2018!
To pull off the Herculean task that is exground filmfest, it takes the combined efforts of myriad external staff members, interns and over 100 helpers during the festival. That’s why we would like to express our warmest thanks to all those who have helped to make exground filmfest 31 a reality. That goes for all of our supporters, sponsors, partners and friends of the festival whose financial support has made it possible for us to put on exground filmfest 31. A special thanks goes to the State Capital of Wiesbaden, the Hessian Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts and to HessenFilm und Medien GmbH.
We look forward to ten eventful days full of new (cinematic) experiences!
