A provincial town in the south of the USSR, 1962. Lyudmila, a devout Communist Party official and idealistic veteran of WW II. Together with other local Party officials, she is taken by surprise by a strike at the local factory, in which her own daughter is taking part. Her once unquestioning faith in the Party line is shaken by her growing awareness of its human toll, tearing apart the world she thought she knew.

“The director says in a statement that ‘This film is a tribute to the purity of that generation, its sacrifices, and the tragedy it experienced seeing its myths collapse and its ideal betrayed.’ Betrayed ideals are not the exclusive property of 1962 Russia, and societies around the world will be able to see their failures in this excellent, moving drama.” (www.RogerEbert.com)
