Hans loves men. This is still a crime in post-war Germany, where the notorious § 175 remains in effect. In prison, repeat offender Hans encounters Viktor, a convicted murderer. Initial antipathy gives way to the development of a relationship full of respect and empathy, which blossoms into love in spite of all the obstacles. GREAT FREEDOM is a film about desire and freedom, the moving story of a love that gradually grows under the pressure of repression, until it ultimately overcomes prison walls. Filmed with great intensity and brilliance by camerawoman Crystel Fournier, GREAT FREEDOM is also extraordinary acting cinema, carried by Franz Rogowski and Georg Friedrich in the lead roles. The film celebrated its world premiere in the “Un Certain Regard” section in Cannes, where it was honoured with the Jury Award.
