focus brazil

In the Country Focus on Brazil, 11 feat-ure-length and 12 short films bring their energy to the screens of the state capital. Genre conventions are bravely revised and elements mixed together with verve. The Focus promises for curious eyes a range of self-assured variations on the musical, western, melodrama, horror movie and science fiction film. Our special recommendation: the perspectives shared by camerawomen. For instance in the opening film THE FATHER’S SHADOW, the cinematic work of art THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF EURÍDICE GUSMÃO or the documentary works on trans-identity and female solidarity. On top of that, there are a host of directorial collaborations to take in, such as the Cannes favourite BACURAU by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, the magical-realism of THE DEAD AND THE OTHERS by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, the associative CALYPSO by Rodrigo Lima and Lucas Parente or the documentary gospel musical HOLY TREMOR by Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca. The Focus encompasses more than contemporary cinema, however. A series curated by Carsten Spicher from the Oberhausen Short Film Festival guides viewers through a selection of
16 and 35mm works treating social and political developments of the past years, leading up to a screening of the long-forbidden ENTRANCED EARTH by the unconventional Glauber Rocha – on analogue film! Festival guests can marvel at Jonathas de Andrade’s THE FISH, on display at Nassauischer Kunstverein, and take in a photography exhibition at Murnau-Filmtheater. We will even be hold-ing film and discussion events inside the Marktkirche crypt. For instance, there will be a talk in co-operation with amnesty international on the film RAUBZUG NACH AMAZONIEN (“RAIDING THE AMAZON”), which focuses on the disastrous environmental policies and human rights violations of the Bolsonaro administration. A panel held at Murnau-Filmtheater will provide insight into the situation for filmmakers under the new government. The diversity of forms is in danger of being co-opted and outlawed. For this reason, we have chosen to look and listen closely to what is happening in this special South American cinema nation with our Focus.
