Lena travels from Poland to Italy to sell her unborn baby. Ermanno, whose uncle wants to adopt the child, is supposed to watch over her and play daddy. Still nearly children themselves, both have grown thick skin to protect against the prickly world. Only gradually does a cautious trust develop between them. With precise images and hypnotic performances, this debut film unfolds in utterly gripping fashion.

“An Italian-Polish co-production in which both nationalities feel narratively and spiritually integral to proceedings, Sironi’s film effectively blends the warm-blooded emotional stakes of classic Italian melodrama with the cooler, more rigorous language of new Eastern European cinema.” (
