Its war on drugs. Vigilante killings are on the rise in Manila. Hired assassins operate as covert hands of the police force. Usual targets are small-time meth dealers in the city’s slums. They are silenced before their supply line is traced to the higher-ups. A teenage orphan is offered a job by an assassin couple to hunt down targets from a kill-list.
In the Philippines the past administrations have been criticized by for allowing the illegal drug trade to proliferate. People who are fed up with the past failed systems have elected a new administration that’s relentless and uncompromising in its methods against the drug crisis. There has been an epidemic of vigilante killings with thousands falling victim. Many critics have labeled it as a war on the poor, causing a clandestine extermination industry to flourish.
Mikhail Red is a Filipino filmmaker. He wrote and directed his first short film when he was fifteen, immediately earning him recognition in local and international film festivals. At age 21 he wrote and directed his first full-length feature film REKORDER. BIRDSHOT was selected as the Philippine entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
