Late summer 2007, southern Brazil: 13-year-old Joana wants to find out why her great aunt Rosa died at 70 without ever having gone out with a man. Encouraged by her friend Carolina, she begins to research Rosa’s past. While she observes how the older women in her family experience intimacy, Joana gradually learns something about her own desires, setting off on a journey with a hypnotic magnetism.

She quietly begins to confront the values of her community, which is formed of descendants from German settler colonizers. As she undergoes personal change, so does the landscape of the lagoon region: giant wind turbines are signifiers of a universe in which time, after all, does not stop. And yet it passes slowly: Cristiane Oliveira’s second feature film comes with its own peculiar sound and rhythm; a tenderness gradually drawing the viewer into the story.

Cristiane Oliveira, born in Porto Alegre/Brazil, made her debut in feature films with NALU ON THE BORDER that premiered internationally at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017 and won 20 awards. Her second feature, THE FIRST DEATH OF JOANA, premiered at the International Film Festival of India and won several prizes, too. Currently, she is working on her third feature film project, UNTIL THE MUSIC IS OVER.
