“I have seen. The self is a witness. It speaks, and yet it has no language.” These are the words Ronya Othmann uses to describe the process of storytelling in her new novel. She wishes to find a form for the unutterable, the genocide of the Yezidi population, the 74th of its kind, perpetrated in 2014 in Shingal by fighters from the IS. VIERUNDSIEBZIG is a journey to the origins, to the murder scenes. The path winds through the camps and to the frontlines, into the living rooms of relatives, all the way to a Yezidi village in Turkey where no one lives today.
