“Spare and bare, this Zeki Demirkubuz takes on the classic Turkish melodrama, moved from antiquated traditions into the landscape and economy of today’s Istanbul.” (Dan Fainaru, Toronto Review)
Zeki Demirkubuz was born in Isparta, Turkey, in 1964. He graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Communications. He began his film career as assistant director to Zeki Ökten in 1986, and worked as an assistant director until making BLOCK-C [C BLOK] his first feature film in 1994. Afterwards he continued to work as an auteur and independent filmmaker. His film THE THIRD PAGE [ÜÇÜNCÜ SAYFA, 1999] was screened at several festivals, including Locarno and Rotterdam. After that Demirkubuz started to work on his trilogy called “Tales of Darkness.” The first two parts FATE [YAZGI] and CONFESSION [İTIRAF] were screened at Un Certain Regard at Cannes. THE WAITING ROOM [BEKLEME ODASI] in which Demirkubuz also played the leading role, concluded the trilogy in 2003.
