youth days
As the saying goes: Whoever goes traveling, can tell us many a story. We hope this also holds true for the whirlwind tour we have planned for our viewers at the 14th edition of exground youth days. How do young people live and think in other parts of the world? What are their passions, their worries and struggles? The seven productions here provide insight into worlds otherwise off limits – perhaps most strikingly in the international co-production A WEDDING, in which the contrasts between Occident and Orient, Western lifestyle and Islamic law, collide most explicitly. In BUTTERFLY KISSES unfathomable secrets also lurk behind the everyday facade of a group of British youths – and even the best of friends are completely oblivious. The hero of the German production LOMO – THE LANGUAGE OF MANY OTHERS also becomes immersed in a sinister world. After a break-up, he loses himself progressively in the digital world and gives the followers of his blog more and more control over his life. The heroine of the Czech-Slovak co-production FILTHY must come to terms with hard analogue reality on the other hand, when she finds herself in a psychiatric clinic after a failed suicide attempt. The French film AVA is buoyant and summery, although the title character is at risk of going blind, which impels her to attempt to experience all of the adventures of youth in fast motion. This lust for life brings us to runaways Kit and Alice from the Canadian production WEIRDOS, which tells a coming-of-age story featuring breath-taking natural imagery and a soundtrack culled from the 70s. In a similar trajectory, the eponymous protagonist of the Swedish documentary film LOVING LORNA has to learn to let go of her dream of becoming a farrier in Dublin. We are eager to find out which film will come out on top in the eyes of the audience and the youth jury! Prize money to the tune of nearly EUR 4,500 is up for grabs – including the purse for the Wiesbaden Youth Film Competition for young talent.
