Anne Clark, an icon of music history and magnificent pioneer of spoken word art, has been gracing stages for more than 30 years now. Clark transforms language into idiosyncratic music. From the early 80s on, her New Wave classics like “Our Darkness” and “Sleeper in Metropolis” have brought ecstatic delight to listeners and inspired generations of musicians. Her analogue synth sounds earned the sombre poetess the reputation of a techno trailblazer too. After severe conflicts with her record label she vanished from the music scene, reinventing herself later in the solitude of Norway. Director Claus Withopf followed Anne Clark for nearly a decade for this long look at an exceptional artist as overwhelming as she is socially critical – a musical rebel, inhabiting her own track far removed from the commercial mainstream. Claus Withopf studied film at City College of New York/CUNY and at Offenbach University of Art and Design. Since 1997 he has shot documentary films, short films, music videos and advertising spots in Germany and the USA. His award-winning films have been shown at numerous international festivals: DINER NYC (2006), GERMAN-AMERICAN TRILOGY (2003) and NEON (2002), which won the Silver Plaque at Chicago Film Festival and received a Special Jury Mention at Festival de Cine Internacional de Barcelona.
