On the beaches of the 1980s, the world of professional surfing is a circus of fluro colours, peroxide hair and radical male egos. GIRLS CAN’T SURF follows the journey of a band of renegade surfers who took on the male-dominated professional surfing world to achieve equality and change the sport forever. Featuring surfing greats Jodie Cooper, Frieda Zamba, Pauline Menczer, Lisa Andersen, Pam Burridge, Wendy Botha, Layne Beachley and more, GIRLS CAN’T SURF is a wild ride of clashing personalities, sexism, adventure and heartbreak, with the women fighting against all odds to make their dreams of competing come true.

Christopher Nelius is an Australian film director, producer and writer working in advertising, feature and series documentary. His first film writing gig was a documentary about the life of surfer Ross Clarke-Jones, narrated by Dennis Hopper. Later, he developed that idea further to co-create a documentary series for Discovery Channel Asia and later a 3D feature documentary called STORM SURFERS 3D that won multiple international festival awards including runner-up in the Audience Award competition at Toronto International Film Festival.

Filmography (selection): 2008 STORM SURFERS, DANGEROUS BANKS, 2010 STORM SURFERS: NEW ZEALAND, 2012 STORM SURFERS 3D, 2018 DON’T BELIEVE IN NEVER; TOUGH CONVERSATIONS (both short films), 2020 GIRLS CAN’T SURF
