In World Cinema, our new section, we are presenting eleven documentary and fiction feature films and taking you along on a journey to Egypt, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, the Dominican Republic, Iraq, Japan, Morocco and Mexico. Women and athletics are some of the thematic focal points of this journey. While FEATHERS and THE EXAM treat women’s struggles for education and equality, the female Mexican wrestlers in LUCHADORAS use their sport to seize a chance for a better life. In THE WITCHES OF THE ORIENT, Julien Faraud pays tribute to the most successful female volleyball team in the history of Japan. And GIRLS CAN’T SURF shows the pioneers of a sport in a male dominated million-dollar industry. However, have no fear, we also have films in the programme that feature men: JAILBREAK PACT, the box office smash from Chile, relates the most spectacular prison break of all time, which took place in 1990, a month before the fall of General Pinochet’s tyrannical regime. Finally, in THE DOG WHO WOULDN’T BE QUIET, the hero is tortured by the Covid lockdown and midlife crisis.
