llie, a small-town police chief, wants to build a modest, comfortable life for himself, but ends up making the wrong choices. Middle-aged and alienated, lazy and socially awkward, he feels the need to be a part of something – to build an orchard, even a home. Ilie’s quiet life is disturbed first by the arrival of straight-arrow younger colleague Vali and then by the discovery of a murder victim.
Although dubious things happen in the village, IIie only sees what suits him. The two policemen predictably develop differing attitudes to the homicide case: go-with-the-flow Ilie is happy to buy the explanation that the death was simply an unfortunate accident. Vali decides to dig deeper. Complications rapidly ensue. After even 90 minutes, the climax is an effectively jarring explosion of violence involving numerous firearms and even an axe.
Paul Negoescu, born in Bucharest/Romania in 1984, graduated there from the Caragiale Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography. His shorts HORIZON, DERBY and RENOVATION were presented in the short film competitions at Cannes and Berlin. His first feature, A MONTH IN THAILAND, was included in the International Critics’ Week sidebar at Venice International Film Festival. MEN OF DEEDS, his newest movie, has just been competing for the “Heart of Sarajevo” at the Sarajevo Film Festival. He also works as a producer and is the artistic director of the Timishort Film Festival in Timişoara/Romania.
Filmography (selection): 2009 RENOVATION, 2010 DERBY (both short films), 2012 A MONTH IN THAILAND, 2012 HORIZON (short film), 2016 TWO LOTTERY TICKETS, 2018 THE STORY OF A SUMMER LOVER, 2022 MEN OF DEEDS
