An absurd comedy featuring the magnificent Mads Mikkelsen: after 15 years in the pen for a robbery conviction, Anker wants to finally enjoy life. There’s only one little problem to solve first: he’s going to need to get his schizophrenic brother Manfred to reveal the secret location where he buried the loot. Alas, these days Manfred thinks he’s John Lennon and claims not to remember. A rather dubious psychiatrist advises Anker to amplify his brother’s delusional worldview and bring him in contact with other patients who are also dead certain they’re members of the Beatles.
The latest escapade from Denmark’s comedy dream team, nominated for the European Film Award, THE LAST VIKING is adorably unpredictable and wickedly funny, firing off punchlines by the second. Anders Thomas Jensen has crafted a grotesque crime caper about confused identities and the unbreakable bond between two brothers.
Anders Thomas Jensen has been working as a director and screenwriter since the mid-1990s. His three short films ERNST & LYSET, WOLFGANG and ELECTION NIGHT were each nominated for an Oscar in the Best Short Film category, with ELECTION NIGHT winning the award in 1999. In 2007, he received another Oscar nomination for his film AFTER THE WEDDING, this time in the Best Foreign Language Film category. In 2011, Susanne Bier won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film with IN A BETTER WORLD, for which he wrote the screenplay. THE LAST VIKING celebrated its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2025.
Filmography (selection): 2003 THE GREEN BUTCHERS, 2005 ADAM’S APPLES, 2015 MEN & CHICKEN, 2020 RIDERS OF JUSTICE, 2025 THE LAST VIKING
