focus italy

In our Focus on Italy, one can trace connecting lines to a central theme: work. For instance sex work, portrayed rather in passing in THERE IS A WOLF IN THE PARK OF THE KING, as a humorous chamber piece revolving around a trans-prostitute in THE HOUSE OF LOVE, or fictionalised in Lina Wertmüller’s CAMORRA. We accompany working children, exploited by their own father (IL MIO CORPO), or in training (THE YOUNG OBSERVANT). For the two adolescent protagonists of SELFIE, work represents a way of escaping organised crime structures, while in NEVIA, from our youth days programme, circus work enables the heroine to flee just such a milieu. Illegal employment and crime as wage work are treated in SOLE and ROSE STONE STAR. The programme depicts the stressful labour on the set of a film (SIMPLE WOMEN) as well as the ritualised work members of a martial arts cult perform on their own bodies in FAITH. Finally, in opening film BAD TALES, the adults are so frustrated by their jobs that a toxic atmosphere engulfs their private lives too. Morbid fun! 2020’s Focus programme once again features multi-faceted films showcasing a diversity of approaches to mise-en-scène, visual languages and characters.
