MICKEY & RICHARD is a biographical exploration of “Colt” model and gay porn star, Mickey Squires – and the man who embodied him. The
documentary tells the story of shy and reserved Richard Bernstein, whose public avatar, Mickey Squires, became an icon of gay male masculinity during a 25-year career in the adult entertainment industry.

While Mickey offered Richard an escape from lifelong insecurities and helped him to survive some of the darkest days of drug addiction, AIDS, and personal loss, it often felt impossible to measure up to the idolized, yet manufactured Mickey. Richard was overshadowed by the fantasy of a fictional character who left little space for true friendships or meaningful connections. Now, years after retiring from the spotlight, the blurry lines between the ordinary reality of Richard and the erotic spectre of Mickey still cast long shadows over Bernstein’s life.
