Ankara, 1999. Under her pseudonym Arzu, 40-year-old Sabiha takes one call after another. She works for an erotic hotline. When a sudden earthquake hits Istanbul, a young man she’s been on the phone with is trapped under rubble and begs her to save him. Sabiha can only think of one solution. She makes a phone call without realising that it will draw her into political issues beyond her control. Exciting thriller with a great leading actress.
“Intense, uncompromising and claustrophobic, on the verge of nightmarish, the film vacillates between a stifling, brutal realism and an implicit symbolic distance. Playing with the motif of the double, the filmmakers denounce head on male hypocrisy, violence hiding behind masks, the corruption of the elite, the toxic contamination of younger generations…” (Cineuropa)
A Turkish-French couple, Çağla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti have been co-directing films and life since 2004. After several shorts that screened in Berlin, Locarno, and Clermont-Ferrand, among other places, and their two successful feature films, NOOR and NINGEN, their third feature SIBEL was invited to 100 festivals, awarded 40 times, was seen by 200,000 viewers worldwide and was a finalist at the Golden Globes and the European Film Awards.
Filmography (together, selection): 2012 NOOR, 2013 NINGEN, 2018 SIBEL, 2025 CONFIDENTE
