Douglas Gordon is a phenomenon. The Scottish multimedia artist, Turner Prize winner and creator of such works as ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT or 24 HOUR PSYCHO is not only a gifted artist of seemingly endless creativity, he’s a relentless entertainer and performer as well.
Joined by filmmaker Finlay Pretsell in his Berlin studio, these sides reveal themselves to be part of a truly vulnerable individual who is not only able to tolerate ambivalence quite well, but also manages to generate it playfully. For, in this enjoyable portrait of an artist the boundaries are blurred – between director and protagonist, fiction and document, staging and snapshot, between life and art. Or were they never really there to begin with?
Finlay Pretsell is a BAFTA winning filmmaker driven by the rawness of non-fiction cinema with an aim of immersing the viewer in an experience they wouldn’t normally have access to. He’s drawn to the human condition, fascinated by genuine characters who come out from behind the facade. Never having formally studied film or anything else and after exhausting all other options, he discovered a fledgling Scottish Documentary Institute which was based at Edinburgh College of Art. His breakthrough as a filmmaker was in 2007 with the music video STANDING START.
Filmography (selection): 2009 MA BAR, 2010 CUTTING LOOSE (both short films and co-directed with Adrian McDowall), 2017 TIME TRIAL, 2026 DOUGLAS GORDON BY DOUGLAS GORDON
