1974. Miss Canada and Anna Planeta travel through the political turmoil of the Cold War. Miss Canada inside a trunk, after refusing to sleep with a wealthy dandy, Anna Planeta on a ship with a weeping Marx as figurehead. After various tribulations, in the notorious commune around Otto Mühl for instance, both end up in a sweet spot: Anna in a sugar nest (with dagger), Miss C. in a chocolate bath (with mass grave).
Makavejev, Serbia’s enfant terrible, freshly banned from the Titoverse, knew why he turned down Coppola’s offer to direct APOCALYPSE NOW. He had bigger things on his mind: the reconciliation of socialism and sex, the destruction of capitalism and the emancipation of the individual. Perhaps no other filmmaker has been as creative when it comes to surpassing limits. Our morality, our body armour, our iron curtains – dissolved in the sweetest of all films (with a bitter aftertaste).
Dušan Makavejev was born in Yugoslavia in 1932. He was an internationally renowned director and writer and died in Serbia in 2019.
Filmography (selection): 1965 MAN IS NOT A BIRD, 1967 LOVE AFFAIR, OR THE CASE OF THE MISSING SWITCHBOARD OPERATOR, 1968 INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED, 1971 W.R.: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM, 1974 SWEET MOVIE, 1981 MONTENEGRO, 1985 COCA-COLA KID, 1988 MANIFESTO, 1992 GORILLA BATHES AT NOON
