The film looks inside the mind of a young woman labelled schizophrenic and finds, not madness, but tortured sexual guilt created by the taboos of society. Juxtaposing visions of personal hell with group psychotherapy sessions, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNDERNEATH is an unsettling experience and provides an illustration of the idea that insanity is a kind of death that must be followed by rebirth.

The terrifying fantasy sequences are utterly convincing images of madness from the inside and convey the despair and destitution of a personality that has been fragmented.

Jane Arden, born Norah Patricia Morris on October 29, 1927, grew up in Pontypool/Wales. She started her career as an actress and was one of the most outspoken radical feminist voices in British theatre and cinema in the 1960s and ’70s. In the 1960s, she began a long creative and personal relationship with director Jack Bond. Jane Arden took her own life at the age of 55. She has since been virtually silenced by near-invisibility: her books long out of print, her plays unperformed, and her films unscreened until a belated revival in 2009.

Filmography: 1968 SEPARATION (co-directed with Jack Bond; credited as director in the closing credits: Jack Bond), 1972 THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNDERNEATH, 1975 VIBRATION (short film), ANTI-CLOCK (co-directed with Jack Bond)
