Mihai (Sebastian Stan) and Lisbet (Renate Reinsve) move from Romania to a remote Norwegian village with their five children. Despite cultural differences and their strict religious upbringing, the children soon settle in and make friends. But when their eldest daughter Elia arrives at school with bruises, the authorities suspect physical abuse and remove the children from their parents’ care. What begins as a child protection case escalates into a conflict over parenting, faith and cultural identity, eventually becoming a political controversy.
