Based on real events, filmmaker Claudia Huaiquimilla traces the lived realities of a group of adolescents in prison who ultimately died by fire and smoke inhalation during an attempted escape. The film follows central figures, such as brothers Ángel and Franco, who have been waiting for their trial for more than a year and whose mother has turned her back on them in the meantime. However, Huaiquimilla also widens the perspective to include other young men and women as well as personnel working in the facility. Her staging of life behind bars is as honest and unflinching as it is tender, with a feel for closeness and the societal contexts and connections of violence and the penal system.
Claudia Huaiquimilla, born in 1987, studied Directing at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago de Chile. Her directorial works include the short film SAN JUAN, LA NOCHE MÁS LARGA (2012), the television series 42 DAYS OF DARKNESS (2022) and the two feature films BAD INFLUENCE (2016) and MY BROTHERS DREAM AWAKE (2021).
Filmography (selection): 2012 SAN JUAN, LA NOCHE MÁS LARGA (short film), 2016 BAD INFLUENCE, 2021 MY BROTHERS DREAM AWAKE
