The film follows the last day of Kesuma, a young Bagan fisherman who lives on a bamboo fishing platform near Krakatoa. After a night with no catch, he tends to his nets, unaware of the disaster about to strike. A massive eruption and tsunami destroy everything, leaving him stranded on a deserted island. Wandering in search of food and water, he traverses barren coasts, lush jungle, and encounters strange life. Seeking refuge in a cave, he descends into a hallucinatory journey through geological eras, lava rivers and abstraction itself – until an unimaginable climax awaits.
Inspired by the loudest bang in history, the volcanic eruption of Krakatoa of 1883, KRAKATOA is an unconventional, hypnotic work eschewing dialogue that draws the viewer in and keeps them riveted, above all thanks to the film’s striking landscape images and brilliant sound design by Oscar winner Nicolas Becker.
Carlos Casas studied fine arts, film, and design in Barcelona and Vienna and has been working as a director since graduating from college. In 2001, he released his first short film, AFTERWORDS. Since then, he has made several films which have been screened at film festivals and in museums. In his work, he often straddles the line between art and film.
Filmography (selection): 2004 ARAL. FISHING IN AN INVISIBLE SEA, 2006 SOLITUDE AT THE END OF THE WORLD, 2008 HUNTERS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME, 2019 CEMETERY, 2026 KRAKATOA
Awards: CineRebels Award (Munich Film Festival, Germany 2026)
