Robert Schmadtke works at “JSA – Joe’s Street-cleaning Agency”, a company specialised in cleaning up the bodily remains of accident and crime victims. The job suits Robert well, as he’s a necrophiliac. Now and then, he helps himself to body parts and brings them home to his flat, to the delight of his girlfriend Betty, who shares his fetish. When Robert brings an entire corpse home with him one day, Betty and he promptly start a ménage à trois with the dead body.

After Betty runs off with her new lover, Robert finds a sense of fulfilment in suicide. Alas, that’s not the end of the fairy tale… Death is the final limit. In Jörg Buttgereit’s cult film NEKROMANTIK, that’s hardly the case though, since the dead can be dug up again in order to better love them. A real stomach-turner, born of devoted handiwork and a deep love for the medium of film.

Jörg Buttgereit gained notoriety in the German horror and splatter genres through his films NEKROMANTIK and SCHRAMM. These films were also released in Japan, Great Britain and the USA. As a director, he worked for feature-film productions that can be classified as horror and arthouse films. In the early-1980s, he screened his first self-made short films – on a Super 8 projector he’d brought with him – in the Berlin artists’ bar “Risiko”. Blixa Bargeld once worked behind the bar; the place no longer exists today. He also celebrated the world premiere of his short film BLUTIGE EXZESSE IM FÜHRERBUNKER at “Risiko” in 1981. In addition, he presented his early cinematic work in the punk rock music club “SO36”.
