Arash, an Iranian doctor, was detained and his practice shut down after being accused of treating injured demonstrators. Subsequently, he loses all hope of a more promising future and resolves to end his life. But first he meets with his sibling for what is meant to be a farewell dinner at his mother’s home. Alas, this evening surrounded by family changes everything for him…
“Every humanist deed and every little act of resistance is a victory against an inhuman system, in matters both large and small. Iman Tahsin’s documentary-like cinematography finds macabre humour and the eponymous rays of hope in keenly observed everyday moments. The light that Arash no longer sees is the one he himself represents for others.” (Lida Bach, www.moviebreak.de)
Ali Asgari is one of the leading voices in contemporary Iranian cinema. In his films, he explores the lives of people suffering under the oppression of the mullah regime in Iran. His short films MORE THAN TWO HOURS (2013) and THE SILENCE (2016) were selected for the short film competition at the Cannes Film Festival, while THE BABY (2014) premiered in the Venice Film Festival competition. His feature film debut, DISAPPEARANCE (2017), also premiered in Venice, UNTIL TOMORROW (2022) at the Berlinale, and TERRESTRIAL VERSES (2023) at Cannes. A BIT OF LIGHT was made during the recent war in Iran.
