Nawal must confront an inevitable fate, a rude awakening that Jordanian inheritance law denies her the right to a life worth living. After her husband’s death, she is deprived of his inheritance and forced to submit quietly. The current law states that most of the estate goes to the husband’s family if he did not leave a son as a descendant. Nawal suffers in silence under the walls of conservatism and a legal system that favors men and hinders women.

In Jordan society, a son makes life easier and is the difference between a “privileged” and a “discriminated life”. Nawal feelings move around fear and desolation, and despite the difficulties, she keeps going because she holds on to the hope that one day things will change for her daughter and future generations of women who also feel trapped and without a voice. Jordan’s submission for the 2024 Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
